Master Photographer: Arnold Newman

Posted in Art, artists, Images, Life, Master of Photography, photography, Portraiture on November 30, 2008 by anuvuestudio

When I think about photography and the world of portraiture, my mind heads directly to the Master, Arnold Newman (1918 – 2006), an American photographer. It’s takes a special talent to take a great portrait, conveying something about the subject, letting the viewer in on a guarded secret. It’s something I’m not particularly great at nor am comfortable with. That’s ultimately why I hold those that are… in high esteem.

Newman, my personal favorite “portrait” photographer said early on in his career : “While taking hundreds of 49 cent portraits, I came to understand to importance of interacting with the people in front of my lens“. His career was helped along by the guidance of Alfred Steiglitz (Father of Photography) and Beaumont Newhall ( a legend among artists in the field) and ultimately he became one of the most talented and sought after photographers of all time.

In Newmans extensive career, he went on to photograph many of the world’s leading artists, writers, poets, politicians, and other’s of great accomplishment.  He was called an “Environmental Portraiture” artist, a term he himself disliked. It places a subject in a carefully composed setting, capturing the essence of their work and personality.

“Photography, as we all know, is not real at all. It is an illusion of reality with which we create our own private world”.

-Arnold Newman

Anuvue wishes to welcome and slap on the back (not hard…yet) our newest member to the ever enlarging family of Artists. Jonathan Fletcher comes highly recommended by my former, wonderful photography teacher (well, one of them) and he has agreed to teach our Photography Workshop for personal enrichment…yes, even though he’s met me!

He’s been a teacher at Orange Coast College (a school with a fabulous photography program) for many years and we are so lucky to be able to steal him for a few hours a week. He wrote me to say he was working on an outline…sounds just like a teacher to me 😉

Jonathan brought in a portion of his portfolio so I could see his work the other night and he actually makes his own pin-hole cameras. The result is a one-of-a-kind style that you will really enjoy seeing when I can wrestle some images from him to share. In the meantime…Meet Jonathan!

Laura’s Reception: Finding Harmony

The brave 40 who came out for Laura’s reception during the fires… AND the lovely Megan provided the tunes…she was fabulous 😉

20 Works by Laura Arellano

Laura’s reception coincided with what seemed like the entire lower state of California burning in all directions. My prayers go out to all those affected and all those waiting in the evacuation zones. Two of Anuvue’s resident artists, Cathy (fused glass) and Jim (Photography) along with Jamie (our teacher and my dear friend) and Susan (our intern) were all directly affected and thankfully all safe at this writing.

40 brave souls ventured out amongst dark, dry skies and unbreathable air to support this generous, lovely woman. I could not be more proud of them and their dedication.

I thought I would share Laura’s work first and then follow up with the reception after I developed them.

Anuvue Cordially Invites You

We do sincerely hope to see you all at our next show. Laura Arellano is a multi talented artist who excels in all mediums. We will be showing 20 selections of her work in oil, pastel, charcoal, graphite and water color beginning Nov. 15th. The colors alone are mesmerizing and you will not want to miss this one. In addition to all this creativity, Laura is a very talented dancer, writer and one of the most positive spirits I’ve ever met. Please come out and meet and support this very lovely, gracious woman, whom I’m so very blessed to call friend.

I’m also very pleased to announce that Laura’s show will be accompanied by a young prodigy. We have 16 year old Megan Aikawa, who writes her own music and sings like a song bird, coming to play piano and guitar for your listening enjoyment. This will be her first concert in front of an audience, other than her adoring family and I know she’s ready for the challenge. Please do come out and support her as well.
