I can still remember clearly the first time I heard his voice. I would lay around listening to the radio, trying to catch his name or the name of the band he was frontman for. I would always hear parts of the song… but never enough to make a purchase in the 5 music stores I went to. I would try to sing words from the song, always to a very confused music merchant. Finally, a person at Virgin records had heard it too. They placed the elusive CD in my hand and I was off. I popped that thing into my car and turned it up so loud the walls vibrated and shuddered. The voice was haunting, dark, melancholy. It was deep like the vocals that have attracted my attention since I was a small child. I played that CD endlessly until people refused to ride in my car. I can laugh at that now. That day Chris became my favorite singer. He had the voice of a dark angel. The kind of tone that hits you inside the chest and gives you that twitchy pain behind your eyes. The tone you feel into your very soul.

I’m a firm believer that some people are just not meant for this world. They try so hard to conform and live amongst us. But their souls are always restless. No amount of love or money or beauty or fame can tame them and their search for that “something” that will keep them steady and quiet their soul…it just never comes. Some people will say he was selfish. Some people will say he abused drugs or alcohol. Others will discuss what was in his mind; depression, mental illness, bi-polar, whatever… as if they knew him well both inside and out. The simple fact is no one did. We only knew his music.

What I say? I pray that God wraps loving arms around his family and friends. I pray Chris has finally found his inner peace and is free.  God Speed Brother.

Die Trying

Posted in Attitudes, Bring it, Diagonal View, Entering New Territory, Faith, Hope, Music, Musicians on June 27, 2010 by anuvuestudio

To change the world,
Start with one step.
However small,
The first step is hardest of all.

Once you get your gate,
You’ll be walkin tall.
You said you never did,
Cause you might die trying,
Cause you might die trying.
Cause you—

If you close your eyes,
Cause the house is on fire.
And think you couldn’t move,
Until the fire dies.
The things you never did,
Oh, cause you might die trying,
Cause you might die trying.
You’d be as good as dead,
Cause you might die trying,
Cause you might die trying.

If you give, you, you begin to live.
If you give, you begin to live.
You begin, you get the world.
If you give, you begin to give
You get the world, you get the world.
If you give, you begin to live.

You might die trying.
Oh, you might die trying.
Yeah, you might die trying.

The things you never did,
Cause you might die trying;
You’d be as good as dead.
You never did.

Out of Washington DC: Mark Charles Heidinger and Rose Guerin know as “Vandaveer”. This is a spectacular B/W video with a beautifully haunting soundtrack.
The song title: Fistful of Swoon

New from David Gray

Yeah yeah

Is the answer none of the above
Crouched in a hole like a mud-streaked fugitive
And everyday a different version of
Pourin’ it away like a water through a sieve

Hey better realize my friend
Love in the end now you can’t take it well
Gotta live

If only for a second
I see a twinklin’ in your eye
Gotta try

Well its flesh and blood and camouflage
In through the wall now somethings gotta give
Just another right to sabotage
See through the haze of a mind-rot sedative

When will you realize my friend
Love in the air now you cant take it well
Gotta live

If only for a second
I see a twinklin’ in your eye
Gotta try
The one that you’re forsaken
Surely more than just a lie
Gotta try
Yeah

When will you realize my friend
Love in the end now you can’t take it well
Gotta live

If only for a second
I see a twinklin’ in your eye
Gotta try
The one that you’re forsaken
Surely more than just a lie
Gotta try
It’s for the taken
And you know not to justify
Gotta try
Everyday is a different version of

818 Opening

The 818 opening had a wonderful turnout. I’m very happy to see the younger crowd coming to appreciate the art and the music…and naturally…the FOOD!

I’m embarrassed to say that the day before, I had been playing with my white balance buttons…and well…my memory isn’t what it used to be. I didn’t even notice until I was importing into Lightroom…a tad late.
It took me a while to get anything at all to show you…please forgive the green, dark people…(not a word Jim).

The Artists all came out to say hello. I enjoyed speaking with them all. Jamie Oliff told me his ideas come from the famous old bar in Hollywood, The Dresden. He sits at the bar, orders cranberry juice and sketches all “The Players” on a napkin. Then he goes home, and with only black acrylic paint, he produces what you see. The white is actually the canvas surface! He said he would take me there to shoot anytime. I am definitely going to visit soon and with the proper settings!

Katie Chappell provided the music for the evening, and when she took her break, other friends entertained us. I was sorry not to get their names. Both young women have beautiful, resonating voices…and the young man…well, he actually played the box he was sitting on like a bongo. I was mesmerized by the sound. It reminded me so much of Ireland and the “In the bar and out” musicians. So wonderful to have so many talented people all together.

Jamie had kids all around her in an impromptu art class. Very fun to see Moms scattered around them. We were also joined for the first time by Cynthia Morehouse (flower in hair), who makes the most beautiful Latin-Catholic inspired jewelry and our newest Glass artist, Dominick Camera (Hat). A big welcome to both.

I dedicate this opening to the Homeless Gentleman (whom at the time, I didn’t know was homeless) that accosted me in the Hallway (2 hours prior to the party) over 8 Pacifico beers. I don’t drink, but I imagine they were worth it. And a very special thanks to no less than 7 of Huntington Beach’s finest, who responded within minutes, calming a very shook up woman and taking control after frantic calls from hair salon and pizza parlor witnesses… who saw my husband running down the middle of a very bust street… in hot pursuit after the much larger guy. His back pack was a bit weighted down, what with the frozen steaks, coffee, beer and all. 😉

My special thanks as always to Jamie, Susan and Micheal, who without their help and love…this would not be possible. Emma will do the lead in…with her favorite painting, The Lighthouse, by Tak Ioka.

Katie Chappell

katie

Our music for the 818 show will be provided by the ever talented singer / songwriter Katie Chappell. I stole Katie for the night from her band Claire’s Daze. You can hear their music on “my space” so you must check them out. I met up with Katie on Tuesday night to show her the around and get to know her. She’s a strikingly beautiful girl with a melodic voice…with good reason… She’s a voice coach.

Katie said “When I was little I noticed that people would listen to me when I sang. It feels nice to be heard sometimes”. I can’t wait until you hear her sing and play her guitar.

Katie’s influences: “People I meet and places I visit”.

Treescapes Opening Night

We had a wonderful turn out for MaryBeth and her Treescapes show. I counted around 100 folks. She’s one popular gal! I developed as many photos as possible today before I realized I was actually asleep with my forehead flat on the keyboard! Truly… I haven’t seen that many attractive people in one room since my own family reunion! 😉 I am posting just a small portion of the 700 shots taken just to share with you some of the party.

Three of MaryBeth’s larger works inside the main gallery sold and I believe 3 smaller illustrations held in sleeves on easel. Fantastic supportive people. I’m so happy for her…and so very, very proud. And the crowd was a pleasure to meet.

Elleni did a beautiful job and played her heart out on that flute. Just beautiful… and her husband Mike was very good to make sure she had breaks and something to eat…and Jenny, oh Jenny! I’ve never seen so many people stuffing food in their mouths with a satisfied smile. The appetizer area was more popular than the beer and wine so I don’t have to say much more there! All in all, it was a terrific night and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Fantastic!

A special thanks to Susan, Jamie and Leo for minding the store while I snuck around with my camera. I have never seen such a pro in handling people and their credit cards as our beautiful Susan. Never gets flustered and even sherlock’s peoples names for me (behind the scenes) when I can’t remember. How cool is that?.

But my greatest pleasure was watching our own little family of artists talking and laughing together. Kweli, Yumi, Laura, Jenny, Jamie and our newest teacher Jonathan…you guys are great to come out and support MaryBeth and it means the world to both her and myself. Without further adieu…the show Saturday night

Elleni Maureas

elleni1

While getting ready for the next show, I kept searching for the musical entertainment to coincide perfectly with MaryBeth’s Treescapes. I was lucky enough to find Elleni Maureas (with help from her Mother) just back from New York and I couldn’t be more thrilled.

Ms. Elleni Maureas is a living legacy of a family of musicians. Both of her parents are accomplished professional musicians in Southern California and she was raised in an environment of constant musical stimulation and support. She began her studies in music on the flute at age 9 and later went on to study privately.

Elleni graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles with a Bachelor’s Degree in Ethnomusicology. In addition to an extensive background in classical music, she has studied and played music from the Near East, Brazil, and the Balkans, as well as jazz. She is also a graduate of New York University, attaining her Master’s in Jazz Studies (performance).

On January 10th, Elleni will be performing solo classical and Brazilian Bossa Nova (the later I had to familiarize and listen up on).
Oh My…You lucky devils will all be pleased 😉
