The 818 opening had a wonderful turnout. I’m very happy to see the younger crowd coming to appreciate the art and the music…and naturally…the FOOD!

I’m embarrassed to say that the day before, I had been playing with my white balance buttons…and well…my memory isn’t what it used to be. I didn’t even notice until I was importing into Lightroom…a tad late.
It took me a while to get anything at all to show you…please forgive the green, dark people…(not a word Jim).

The Artists all came out to say hello. I enjoyed speaking with them all. Jamie Oliff told me his ideas come from the famous old bar in Hollywood, The Dresden. He sits at the bar, orders cranberry juice and sketches all “The Players” on a napkin. Then he goes home, and with only black acrylic paint, he produces what you see. The white is actually the canvas surface! He said he would take me there to shoot anytime. I am definitely going to visit soon and with the proper settings!

Katie Chappell provided the music for the evening, and when she took her break, other friends entertained us. I was sorry not to get their names. Both young women have beautiful, resonating voices…and the young man…well, he actually played the box he was sitting on like a bongo. I was mesmerized by the sound. It reminded me so much of Ireland and the “In the bar and out” musicians. So wonderful to have so many talented people all together.

Jamie had kids all around her in an impromptu art class. Very fun to see Moms scattered around them. We were also joined for the first time by Cynthia Morehouse (flower in hair), who makes the most beautiful Latin-Catholic inspired jewelry and our newest Glass artist, Dominick Camera (Hat). A big welcome to both.

I dedicate this opening to the Homeless Gentleman (whom at the time, I didn’t know was homeless) that accosted me in the Hallway (2 hours prior to the party) over 8 Pacifico beers. I don’t drink, but I imagine they were worth it. And a very special thanks to no less than 7 of Huntington Beach’s finest, who responded within minutes, calming a very shook up woman and taking control after frantic calls from hair salon and pizza parlor witnesses… who saw my husband running down the middle of a very bust street… in hot pursuit after the much larger guy. His back pack was a bit weighted down, what with the frozen steaks, coffee, beer and all. 😉

My special thanks as always to Jamie, Susan and Micheal, who without their help and love…this would not be possible. Emma will do the lead in…with her favorite painting, The Lighthouse, by Tak Ioka.

Kweli

This past Sunday, I spent traveling to Long Beach to visit with two of the Studio Artists. My second stop was about 8 miles from the first, at the home of Kweli, a very talented jewelry Artisan. I met Kweli at a show a few months back in Santa Ana. The city of Santa Ana has an emerging group of Artists that either live or frequent the downtown Grand Central Art Gallery, subsidized by a local State College. A few times a year the folks that live there open their studios allowing regular folks and potential art buyers to walk through and see their work. I love to go and talk with the local Artists and see what’s new.

I was there with my camera one night when I happened upon Kweli. She was there selling the most eye catching, intricate, one-of-a-kind jewelry…something I can never pass up. I spoke to her briefly about her work and found her to be such a gentle spoken, sincere lovely woman, that I took a chance about letting her in on my little secret about a future gallery. I think it was then that we argued back and forth about her insisting I take a pair of earring with her card attached so that I would remember her. We went back and forth until I finally I caved in…well…you have to see those earrings to understand my weakness 😉

Kweli lives in Long Beach and works as an Electrician by day and finds time for her Art and show events in between. When I arrived at Kweli’s house I was greeted at the porch with a hug and a big smile… and when I entered her house, I realized quite quickly that not only was Kweli a jewelry master, she’s a painter and potter too. She had paintings displayed around the room showcasing magnificent colors and graphics, intricate African motif pottery and oh yes…a fabulous collection of necklaces and matching earring sets…and absolutely all of them could be hanging off my neck and ears! I totally gawked at everything!

She showed me all around her lovely home and I got to see the studio she has set up, complete with some of the most amazing beads I’ve ever come across. A friend back from a recent trip to Africa, had brought her some large, glossy pieces of deep red coral to work with and I can’t wait to see what she creates with it… Some large, golden, oval shaped beads also caught my attention and if I remember right, they were from Afghanistan. I know she’ll make something wonderful with them.

Kweli has a sparkle about her…a certain grace that drew me in. She and I are close in age and she totally understands where I am at at this part of my life. I believe she and I will be great friends. Meet Kweli, one inspiring woman.

And so it begins…

I have sat in this room both literally and figuratively until I can see it finished in my mind. I sit in total quiet and stare until it materializes right in front of my eyes. I have made tweaks here and there by mere inches, changed drawings over and over and traded older ideas for new ones with all the tradesmen that have a part to play in the building. I only get one first impression so it has to count…and it has to stick in the visitor’s mind.

Yesterday, my talented Carpenter Tim and I sat on the floor and made paper patterns. It allowed me to see the exact position and sizes in relationship to the floor space and walls. It also allowed my Electrician George to see where the lighting would need to be placed. Tonight I watched as 2 x 4’s, ladders, drywall and paint were all carried up. Tomorrow, I will be present and accounted for at 6:30 am for the delivery of my new sliding glass doors. Less windows, more walls.

With each check I write, each time I pull my credit card out, my stomach muscles tighten and clench. I no longer sleep at night, what with this worry or that thing I might forget… unless I get up to write it down. Both my Family and Friends have a blind faith in me that I will make this happen and it will be good. I feel tremendous pressure (actual terror on occasion) to not let anyone down, including myself. But each time I meet a new Artist and see that light that come into their eyes and hear the excitement in their voices, I feel something that words cannot express. It’s something I lost a while back, something I’ve been searching desperately to re-gain. If Anuvue doesn’t kill me before I get it open, I will have one heck of a write off this year…and be a very excited, very busy, women…with a dream that came to life.

My own back yard

In my continuing saga to build an unusual reception type desk to fit the spirit of Anuvue, I set out exploring the internet. I don’t know about you, but I typically get side tracked away from exactly what I’m looking for… and end up trying to ship some strange, obscure thing from somewhere like a glacier off Greenland (or is that Iceland).

Anyway, my mind see’s this very cool desk, made from stainless steel, with some sort of pattern…and of course will probably end up costing not only the farm, but most likely 3 times anything I could have purchased ready made. But, as luck would have it, I found the perfect thing…in New York. Hey, at least I’ve worked my way to the US.

I have this friend who makes trade show booths and builds all the interiors of new stores for a rather large Surf Company… and, if I don’t stock him too much, he is always happy to help. I emailed him (much safer for him) and told him what I was looking for. I asked him if he knew anyone closer…say So Cal area…somewhere I could drive and pick up a sheet of this beautiful stuff, without bending or mangling it in the process. And, as is usually the case…he told me of a place, that embarrassing as this is to admit…is about 1/4 mile from the Printing Company I have worked at for these 20 LONG years. When I saw the old map Quest map…I burst out loud laughing!

I probably should have called these poor unsuspecting folks to warn them I was coming. They could have made themselves ready… or at least armed themselves with a metal trash can lid. Now picture a place that works for the Aircraft Industries and Automotive type people…and then picture a woman standing at two double glass doors…as they opened, shrieking with glee. I ran up and down the isles, caressing all the beautiful sheets of metals available…patterned, rolled, anodized, embossed, pierced…holy moses…my Mecca. One poor soul came up, perplexed to see a woman in leggings, sandals and a crazy skirt… I think he figured I was on my way to the mall and got it all wrong…and then…he asked the magic question…”Can I help you Miss” with up-extended eyebrows?

For the next half hour, he patiently answered every hairbrained question I could think of…”What’s this for?”…”How is that used”…”oh my God, what colors do you have”…”what size”…”how much” ? You get the idea.

He was a very nice man and will no doubt hide from me when I return to buy my ideal sheet metal. Upon my departure, I did ask how long the company had been there …He told me 20 years…

Ok, let me bore you

My long time friend Claude called me tonight to wish me good luck with Anuvue. I know I will be seeing him often (he’s retired…kinda)… and will be hanging out. Claude, I’m not carrying you up the damn stairs. I’m seeing pole vaulting in your future…

As far as putting something on the blog, well …I met my buddy Chris down at the future Home away from Home. He’s an expert on everything…that description makes it easy…and he is. He’s going to draw all the elevations (and bring me back to earth) and advise me on the do’s and don’ts. ( Is don’t’s a word and where does the apostrophe really go?) Chris had the “Lost Vegas” sign built for me…so I can’t wait to see his ideas on movable walls. I plan to build my own desk…that should be a riot…maybe I should have my buddy Jim video tape it. I might make America’s Funniest videos (more likely a trip to the hospital). Anyway, after drawing the dimensions, I decided to take more photos. Heck, Daryl (one of the 2 current tenants) put a brighter bulb in one of the two existing lights…so…what the hay. I brought him cookies and he let me stay. I had to explain they were not homemade. My Sisters’ would be the first (in a long line) to say that was most fortunate for both him and his stomach lining.

Anyway, my friends…let me bore you…with more of the same…yet not 😉
